DEVELOPMENT OF A SPLIT SCREEN APPLICATION FOR THE DATA ENTRY OF A SHIPMENT

Abstract

Development of split screen application for the data entry of the shipment is a project work aimed at developing software that will enable shipping company register consignment for delivery. This will in many ways facilitate consignment delivery and help keep record of existing records to avoid lost of information.
So this project work is designed to explore the possible means of implementing a computerized split screen application for the data entry of the shipment using visual basic 6.0 as the platform for the software development.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A shipping company is an organization which offers special deliveries of packages, vehicles, goods or information. Shipping services usually boast faster delivery times than any alternative method of transporting goods, and many services in the modern world rely on them. The idea of shipping service has been around almost as long as civilization, with rulers in antiquity using couriers as a means to make new laws and edicts known throughout their lands. In the modern age of international business, the shipping service has become a keystone of enterprise, even as emerging technologies such as the fax machine and Internet have rendered them less useful in some areas.
Shipping has multiple meanings. It can be a physical process of transporting commodities and merchandise goods and cargo, by land, air, and sea. It also can describe the movement of objects by ship.
Land or “ground” shipping can be by train or by truck. In air and sea shipments, ground transportation is required to take the cargo from its place of origin to the airport or seaport and then to its destination because it is not always possible to establish a production facility near ports due to limited coastlines of countries. Ground transportation is typically more affordable than air shipments, but more expensive than shipping by sea especially in developing countries like India, where Inland infrastructure is not efficient.
Shipment of cargo by trucks, directly from the shipper’s place to the destination, is known as a door to door shipment and more commonly multimodal transport system. Trucks and trains make deliveries to sea ports and air ports where cargo is moved in bulk.
Much shipping is done aboard actual ships. An individual nation’s fleet and the people that crew it are referred to its merchant navy or merchant marine. Merchant shipping is lifeblood to the world economy, carrying 90% of international trade with 102,194 commercial ships worldwide. The term shipping in this context originated from the shipping trade of wind power ships, and has come to refer to the delivery of cargo and parcels of any size above the common mail of letters and postcards.
.
1.1    Statement of the Problem
Keeping record of cargo in a shipping company and their delivery information is carried out manually. A lot of files are opened for daily record of cargo received or delivered. This litters the office with much paper documents. Most often records are misplaced and when a client comes to collect his cargo, he\she spend some hours waiting for confirmation of the cargo. Hence delay is bound to occur while delivering cargo to customers.

1.2    Aims and Objectives of the Study
The objective of this project is to examine how shipping Company cargo can be stored in a database for easy access and delivery. Thereby bringing change into the system by introducing split screen for data entry of the shipment to replace traditional filing system.

1.3    Purpose of the Project
This project work is aimed at developing software for keeping record of cargo received for delivery and collection details. A database will be designed to store records of cargo received, their destination, date delivered, shipping company etc.

1.4    Significance of the Study
The project work will help in a good number of ways to ease the queuing system in the shipping company as the computerized system will help process records on time. Also the new system will help shipping companies to achieve the following:
o       Keep track of cargo received or delivered in a day.
o       Retrieve cargo information easily at the point of delivery .
o       Maintain a database for all the cargo received in the office from year to year.
o       Reduce paper work in the office.

1.5    Scope of the Study
This research work is limited to cargo delivery using Nigerian Ports Authority as a case study. The software developed will be carried out using Visual Basic to manage the database.

1.6      Constraints and Limitations
This project covers all aspect of cargo record processing system using Nigerian Ports Authority as a case study. Due to time constraint, the program developed can only be used in cargo data entry. What ever is left out is as a result of time and finance constraints.

1.7    Definition of Terms
Shipment: Cargo transported under the terms of a single bill of lading or air waybill, irrespective of the quantity or number of containers, packages, or pieces.

Courier: A courier is a person or company employed to deliver messages, packages and mail.

Databases:  A systematically arranged collection of computer data, structured so that it can be automatically retrieved or manipulated. It is also called databank.

File Transfer:  Any kind of computer file can be sent via the Internet from one Internet user to another. Table of accounts on spreadsheets, design by a graphic artists, music sound files etc, can all be exchanged in this way.
